Very useful site. It keeps me updated about mining issues of Orissa. I am managing the contents of mining indepth section on india environment portal. Recent lead story is the Model State Mineral Policy 2010. It can be viewed at http://www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in/indepth/term/325
Looking for more stories on mining to be highlighted and make public much of the information produced by research institutes, Government organisations, NGOs and mining experts.

Hi,

I wanted to know if there has been any recent developments on the POSCO issue at all. In particualr, has there been any investigations into the violent incidents against protesters and has either the government or the company taken any steps to deal with local communities members still unwilling to move to make way for the project?

At this point, the MoEF is yet to follow up the in-principle forest clearance for mining Niyamgiri by the final approval. Jairam Ramesh has been mentioning the Vedanta issue - and therefore one can estimate that this issue remains contentious.
On the ground the opposition continues - though Vedanta is spending huge amount of money to purchase opponents (including youths from Dongaria community) as well as use its private army to intimidate opponents.
